CHAPTER 8

Smoke billowed from the front end of Jocelyn’s car and she was tilted at a 90-degree angle downward when she finally pushed the airbag out of her way. Her nose bled and ran down into her mouth. All that kept her from going over the steering wheel into the windshield was the seatbelt.

A knock at her door caused her to jump and she hit her head on the ceiling of the car. She turned and couldn’t believe it when she saw Simon standing there. How had he gotten there? She was on her way to work. The accident had just happened, hadn’t it?

How hard had that airbag hit her?

Had she lost consciousness?

She slowly reached for the door with her left arm and unlocked it. This allowed him to open it from his side. He had to yank on it hard to get it to open all the way because the impact of the crash must have bent the frame. Which meant she had been going faster than she thought when she crashed.

“Are you okay? Can you move?”

“I think so? But I’m not so sure.”

“Did you hit your head?”

“I might have.”

“Should I wait for the ambulance to get here? Or do you want me to go ahead and get you out of there? I really think I should get you out. Your engine is smoking bad. I’m afraid it might ignite.”

“I-I don’t know. I think I’m just shaken up and my nose hurts like the dickens from being busted by the airbag. But I’m pretty sure I lost track of time from impact until you showed up.”

“Okay. Hang onto the steering column. I’m going to reach in and turn off your motor, then I’m going to release the belt and attempt to get you out. Very slowly so as, not to injure you. Be sure to look straight ahead as I do this so I don’t injure you.”

“Got it. How’d you know I was here anyway?”

“Thompson. He called me because I was closer than the patrol unit. One of the teens on the bus reported the accident. CSPD is on their way here,” he explained. “What happened?”

“My brakes failed. The school bus was in front of me. When the bus slowed to make a stop, I pressed the brake, but my foot went to the floor. I pumped them, but it did no good. It was either hit the bus or the ditch.”

Simon nodded. “And you chose the ditch. It was all you could do to save those kids.” He reached across her and released the seatbelt, bringing it back across her. Then he slipped one arm under her knees and supported her back with his other. He lifted her out of the car and carried her to the road. He kept his arm around her waist providing support until she was steady.

She stared up at him, wrapping her arms around him.

“You look like you’ve been a naughty girl whose been into red jelly doughnuts.”

“Not funny.” She goosed him under his arm.
